Newtonville Historic
50 Highland Ave was built circa 1870 on a large rectangular lot that was part of an early Newtonville subdivision. The subdivision has many Italianate and Victorian house that have been moderately maintained. 50 Highland Ave was designed in the Italianate style. Paired scroll brackets supporting projecting eaves, round-arched gable windows and paneled bay windows are major design elements of the original building. The original building presented many challenges. One being the failing 1870’s rubble foundation. This issue was resolved by raising the building on stilts and pouring a new cast in-place foundation. The house was lowered on the new foundation and three additional condo units were constructed to the rear. The new addition was designed using the original proportions and design elements of the original 1870’s building. The projected paneled bays drove the rhythm of the exterior design and original details seamlessly integrate new and old. The design team worked closely with the Newton Historic and Neighborhood Committee to preserve the historic urban fabric of Newtonville.
